Raj Mathai, NBC Bay Area news anchor. Life in TV News: The Good, Bad and Ugly

A twelve-time Emmy award winner, Raj Mathai, has had a remarkable career.  He is one of the Bay Area’s most well-known journalists, anchoring the 5:30 p.m., 6 p.m., 7 p.m., and 11 p.m. NBC Bay Area news.  Some of the high-profile newsmakers he’s interviewed include Vice President Kamala Harris, Governor Gavin Newsom, General Colin Powell, baseball legend Barry Bonds, 49ers owner Jed York and many more.

Not only does Mathai present breaking news; he covers big events such as the 2020 Super Bowl in Miami, 2019 Gilroy mass shooting and 2017 Inauguration of Donald Trump. He has reported on-location from the Olympics in London, Vancouver, Turin, Athens, Salt Lake City and Tokyo. Born in Trivandrum, India, Raj grew up on the Peninsula, attended Los Altos High School and graduated from San Diego State University with degrees in journalism and political science. In 1995, Raj became the first Indian sportscaster in the U.S.
