Jonathan Chen

Jonathan Chen earned both his PhD in computer science and medical degrees at UC Irvine. Before his medical training, Chen co-founded a company to translate his computer science graduate work into an expert system for organic chemistry. Its applications range from drug discovery to being an education tool for students around the world.

Chen is the Director of Medical Education in Artificial Intelligence for Stanford Medicine and leads a research group combining human and artificial intelligence approaches to deliver better care than either can provide alone. He continues to practice medicine for the rewards of caring for real people and to inspire his research using electronic medical records with machine learning and data analytics to improve clinical decisions.

His expertise is regularly featured in popular press outlets with over 100 publications in leading clinical and informatics venues and awards from the NIH, National Library of Medicine, American Medical Informatics Association, International Brotherhood of Magicians and others.
