God, Oil and Country: Changing the Logic of War in Sudan
John Prendergast is the Co-Chair of ENOUGH, a project with the mission “to abolish genocide and mass atrocities by promoting peace, providing protection, and punishing the perpetrators.”
Previously, he worked as Special Adviser to the President of the Africa Group at the International Crisis Group (ICG). Before joining ICG, he was a Special Adviser to the US State Department focusing on conflict resolution initiatives in Africa. Prendergast has worked for a variety of think tanks, UN agencies and NGOs focusing on issues pertaining to Africa. He was an executive fellow of the United States Institute of Peace and Director of African Affairs at the National Security Council and is active in the US Institute of Peace, Human Rights Watch, and UNICEF.
He is the author of numerous books on Africa, including ICG’s book on Sudan, God, Oil & Country: Changing the Logic of War in Sudan, as well as its book on southern Africa, Blood and Soil: Land, Politics and Conflict Prevention in Zimbabwe and South Africa. His most recent book, written with Don Cheadle, is Not On Our Watch: The Mission to End Genocide in Darfur and Beyond. Throughout his career, Prendergast has focused on development and reconciliation issues, and has traveled widely and frequently in Africa. He has published numerous articles in the media and academic journals and is a regular commentator on TV and radio. He is a visiting professor at the University of San Diego and the American University in Cairo.
